How to Cancel Subscription on iPhone (Including Hidden Ones)

How to Cancel Subscription on iPhone

That app you tried for a free week is still charging you £9.99 a month, and you cannot remember signing up. It happens to almost everyone. To stop it, open Settings, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, choose the one you want to end, then tap Cancel Subscription and confirm. Simple, until the subscription does not appear, the cancel button is missing or you are not sure who is charging you. This guide handles all of those cases as well.

Quick answer: Settings > your name > Subscriptions > tap the subscription > Cancel Subscription > Confirm.

How To Cancel Subscription On iPhone In Settings

This is the quickest route and works on iPhones running iOS 17 and later, including iOS 26.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap your name at the top of the screen.
  3. Tap Subscriptions.
  4. Tap the subscription you want to stop.
  5. Scroll down and tap Cancel Subscription. On a free trial, it may say Cancel Free Trial.
  6. Tap Confirm.

You will see a screen saying your subscription will end on a certain date. That is your proof it worked. In most cases you keep full access until the end of the period you already paid for, so you do not need to rush to use it up.

(Alternatively, open the App Store, tap your profile icon in the top right, and tap Subscriptions to reach the same menu).

Finding and Canceling “Hidden” Subscriptions

If money keeps leaving your account but the service isn’t listed in your Apple ID settings, the subscription is hidden or billed outside of Apple:

  • Check Other Apple Accounts: If you share devices or have an old Apple ID, log into it under Settings to check for active plans.
  • Third-Party Direct Billing: Services like Netflix, Spotify, or Disney+ often bill your credit card directly through their web browsers rather than Apple. Search your email inbox for “subscription,” “invoice,” or “receipt” to find the outside provider, then log into that specific company’s website to cancel.
  • Family Sharing: Check if a family member signed you up for a shared plan under Family Sharing.

Pro Tip

Cancel a subscription the day you sign up, not the day you get charged. For most services you still keep access until the end of the period, and the renewal simply never happens. Then, if you love it, you can switch it back on with one tap. This one habit removes almost every surprise charge.

How To Cancel From The App Store

  1. Open the App Store.
  2. Tap your profile picture in the top right corner.
  3. Tap Subscriptions.
  4. Select the subscription and tap Cancel Subscription.

This takes you to the same list, so use whichever path is easier to remember.

How To Cancel A Subscription On A Mac

  1. Open the App Store app.
  2. Click your name at the bottom of the sidebar.
  3. Click Account Settings and sign in if asked.
  4. Scroll to Subscriptions and click Manage.
  5. Click Edit next to the subscription, then Cancel Subscription.

How To Cancel A Free Trial

Free trials are where most surprise charges come from. The trial converts to a paid plan automatically unless you cancel first. The best approach is to cancel as soon as you start the trial, because you can often keep the free period anyway.

However, with some subscriptions, cancelling a free trial ends your access straight away. If you want to use the full trial, set a reminder for a day or two before it ends, then cancel. Always check the date shown on the Subscriptions screen.

How To Cancel iCloud+, Apple Music And Apple One

Some Apple services have their own steps.

  • iCloud+: Go to Settings > your name > iCloud > Manage Account Storage > Change Storage Plan, then tap Downgrade Options and choose the free 5GB plan. Before you do, make sure you back up your iPhone another way, because a smaller plan can stop your iCloud backups.
  • Apple Music: Open the Music app, tap your profile picture, tap Manage Subscription, then Cancel Subscription.
  • Apple One: It appears in the normal Subscriptions list. Tap it and choose Cancel, or switch to a smaller plan.

What To Do If You Cannot Find The Subscription

If it is not in your list, the charge is probably coming from somewhere else. Work through this checklist.

  1. Try another Apple Account. You may have subscribed with a different email address. Check under any other Apple Accounts you have used.
  2. Search your email. Look for messages titled “Your receipt from Apple” or “Your subscription confirmation”. The receipt names the service and the account it was billed to.
  3. Check your bank statement. Apple charges show as APPLE.COM/BILL. Charges from the service itself, such as its own name, mean it is billed directly.
  4. The service bills you directly. Many streaming and music apps let you sign up on their own website. In that case, cancelling on your iPhone will not work. Log in to their website and cancel there.
  5. Ask your family organiser. With Family Sharing, the person who bought the subscription is the only one who can cancel it.
  6. Check Google Play or PayPal. Some subscriptions run through those instead.

Why There Is No Cancel Button

If you tap a subscription and see Expires or Renews but no cancel option, there are a few explanations.

  • It is already cancelled and simply waiting to end. You will see an expiry date, not a renewal date.
  • It is a shared subscription managed by someone else.
  • It is billed outside Apple, so Apple cannot change it.
  • It is a one time purchase, not a subscription, so there is nothing to cancel.

Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription either. If you are clearing out your phone, cancel first, then remove the app. Our guide to clear storage on iPhone shows which apps are worth keeping.

How To Get A Refund

If you were charged for something you did not want, you can ask Apple for a refund.

  1. Go to reportaproblem.apple.com and sign in with your Apple Account.
  2. Choose I’d like to, then Request a refund.
  3. Select the reason and the subscription, then submit.

Apple reviews requests case by case, so a refund is not guaranteed. You have the best chance if you ask quickly and explain clearly, for example that you forgot to cancel a trial or did not mean to subscribe.

How To Stop Surprise Subscriptions

  • Check your list every few months. Open Settings > your name > Subscriptions and look at Active and Expired.
  • Watch for renewal emails. Apple often sends a reminder before yearly renewals.
  • Be careful with free trials. Cancel the same day you start.
  • Use Ask to Buy for children. It stops them subscribing without approval.
  • Use privacy tools carefully. If you sign up to sites in a private tab, you will not have a history to look back on. Our guide to turn off private browsing explains how to stay in control of what your browser remembers.

Notification overload can also make you miss renewal reminders. If your phone is silencing them, check your Do Not Disturb settings so you do not miss a warning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I lose access straight away if I cancel a subscription?

Usually not. Most subscriptions stay active until the end of the period you already paid for. The exception is a free trial, which may end immediately when you cancel, so check the date shown on the confirmation screen.

Does deleting an app cancel the subscription?

No. Deleting an app only removes it from your iPhone. The subscription stays active and continues to charge you until you cancel it in Settings or with the provider.

How do I know if a subscription is really cancelled?

Go back to Settings > your name > Subscriptions and open it. A cancelled subscription shows an expiry date, such as “Expires 12 October”, instead of a renewal date. Apple also sends a confirmation email.

Can I cancel a subscription that I bought on another Apple Account?

Only by signing into that account. Subscriptions belong to the Apple Account that bought them, so you need to sign in with those details in Settings, or ask the family organiser if it is shared.

Why am I being charged for a subscription I do not see in my list?

It may be billed by the service itself, through another Apple Account, or through Google Play or PayPal. Search your emails for the receipt and check your bank statement to see who is taking the payment.

Can I get my money back after cancelling?

You can ask Apple through reportaproblem.apple.com. Refunds are decided case by case, so explain the reason clearly and request it as soon as you notice the charge.
