How To Check Data On Dual Sim And Esim iPhones
If your iPhone has two lines, such as a personal SIM and a work eSIM, the Mobile Service screen lists each plan separately. Tap the plan you want to check and look at Current Period for that line. Each one needs to be reset and checked with its own network.
Pro Tip
Reset your usage statistics on your billing date, then check Settings, Mobile Service once a week. A quick look each Friday shows you whether you are on track, so you can switch on Low Data Mode before you run out, not after.
How To See How Much Data You Have Left
Because the iPhone does not know your plan, you need one extra step. Use whichever of these is easiest.
- Your network’s app. Apps such as My EE, My O2 and My Vodafone show your allowance, how much you have used and when it renews, usually on the home screen.
- Your network’s website. Log in to your online account and open the usage or bundles page.
- A text or call to your network. Most networks offer an automated way to check your allowance. Look at their help page for the exact number or keyword, because it varies by provider.
- The quick maths. Take your monthly allowance and subtract the Current Period figure from Settings. For example, if your plan gives you 20GB and your iPhone shows 12.4GB used, you have roughly 7.6GB left. Remember this only works if your counter was reset on your billing date.
Note: your allowance renews on your billing date, not the first of the month, so check that date on your bill before you do the sum.
How To Find Which Apps Use The Most Data
Scroll down on the same Mobile Data screen. Below Current Period you will see a list of apps, ordered from the biggest data user to the smallest.
- Tap the toggle next to any app to stop it using mobile data. It will then only work on WiFi.
- Look out for Personal Hotspot, which shows the data other devices used through your phone.
- Look for System Services, which covers things like iCloud, updates and background tasks.
- Watch for video and music apps, which are the usual heavy users.
If one app is using far more than the rest, you have found your problem.
How To Reset The Data Counter
Your iPhone keeps counting until you tell it to stop, so the Current Period number could include several months. To make it match your billing cycle:
- Go to Settings > Mobile Service > Mobile Data.
- Scroll to the very bottom.
- Tap Reset Statistics and confirm.
You will see a Last Reset date underneath, which helps you remember when you last did it. Set a monthly reminder on your billing date so your numbers stay accurate.
Why Your iPhone And Network Show Different Numbers
It is normal for the two figures to differ slightly. Here is why:
- Your counter may not have been reset on your billing date.
- Networks count data in slightly different ways, and some bundles include free or zero rated apps that do not count against your allowance.
- Data used on another SIM, or through a tablet or hotspot sharing your plan, may only show on the network’s side.
- Recent usage sometimes takes a while to appear in the network’s app.
If there is a big gap, trust the network for billing purposes and use your iPhone for spotting patterns.
How To Stop Using So Much Data in iPhones
Once you can see your usage, take control of it.
Turn on Low Data Mode. Go to Settings > Mobile Service > Mobile Data Options and choose Data Mode, then select Low Data Mode. This pauses automatic updates and background tasks.
Turn off WiFi Assist. At the bottom of the Mobile Service screen, switch off WiFi Assist so your iPhone does not quietly switch to mobile data when your WiFi is weak.
Limit background app refresh. Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh and switch off apps that do not need to update when you are not using them.
Change photo and video settings. In Settings > Photos, check Mobile Data to stop iCloud Photos uploading over mobile data. Set streaming apps like Netflix, YouTube and Spotify to a lower quality on mobile.
Download before you leave. Download playlists, maps and shows at home on WiFi.
Keep your phone light. Low storage can cause apps to behave badly and re download content. Our guide on how to clear storage on iPhone gives you 10 easy ways to free up space.
Does 5G Use More Data?
It can, because faster speeds make it easy to stream in higher quality without noticing. 5G only works on models that support it, so if you are unsure, you can find your iPhone model in a few taps and check its specifications. The Data Mode setting lets you choose whether your iPhone uses more data on 5G or stays standard.
What Does Not Use Your Data Allowance
Some things do not count against your allowance, which is worth knowing when you are running low:
- Do Not Disturb and Focus do not stop data. Notifications still arrive quietly, which is explained in our guide to Do Not Disturb settings.
- Alarms and government warnings use the mobile network but not your data allowance, so you do not need to worry about them. If you are curious, see how to change iPhone alarm sound and read about iPhone emergency alerts settings.

Frequently Asked Questions About iPhone Data Usage
Can my iPhone tell me how much data I have left?
No. iPhone only shows how much mobile data you have used. To see what is left, check your network’s app, website or account, or subtract your usage from your monthly allowance.
Where is the data usage in iPhone settings?
Go to Settings > Mobile Service > Mobile Data. On older versions the menu may be called Mobile Data or Cellular. The Current Period figure shows what you have used so far.
Why is my data going so fast?
The most common causes are streaming video, background app refresh, cloud photo uploads and Personal Hotspot. Check the app list under Mobile Data to see which app is using the most.
Does WiFi use my mobile data?
No. When you are connected to WiFi, your usage does not count against your mobile allowance. The exception is WiFi Assist, which can move you to mobile data if the WiFi signal is weak.
Does the data counter reset automatically each month?
No. You have to reset it yourself using Reset Statistics at the bottom of the Mobile Data screen. Do it on your billing date to keep the figures accurate.
