How to Switch Location From iPhone to iPad (Find My)

How to Switch Location From iPhone to iPad

You are using your iPad more than your iPhone, or the phone stays in a bag while the tablet travels with you, and your family still sees the phone’s location. The fix takes about ten seconds, but the option hides in Find My and many people never see it. This guide shows the exact steps, explains why your location can look wrong after the switch, and covers what to do when it will not update.

What “Switching Location” Actually Means

Find My shares your location from one device at a time. When you turn on Share My Location, Apple lets you choose which of your devices represents you. Friends and family see where that device is, not necessarily where you are.

So switching location from iPhone to iPad means telling Find My to use your iPad as the source. Nothing moves and nothing is faked. You are only choosing which of your real devices reports your position.

Before You Start

Check three things first.

  1. Same Apple Account. Your iPad and iPhone must be signed in to the same Apple Account.
  2. Location Services on. On the iPad, open Settings, Privacy & Security, Location Services and make sure it is switched on.
  3. Connection. The iPad needs WiFi or a cellular connection so the location can update.

How to Switch Location From iPhone to iPad

  1. Open the Find My app on your iPad.
  2. Tap Me at the bottom left of the screen.
  3. Turn on Share My Location if it is not already on.
  4. Look under My Location to see which device is currently sharing.
  5. Scroll to the bottom and tap Use This iPad as My Location.

The device shown under My Location changes to your iPad, and that is all. You can also review these settings in Settings, then tap your name, then Find My. If you do not see the Use This iPad option, your iPad is probably already the sharing device. Check the wording under My Location.

Pro Tip

The people who see your location see the device you selected, not you. If you leave your iPad at home while you go out, your family will see you at home. Switch to whichever device actually travels with you, and give your location a label such as Home or Work in the Me tab so contacts understand what they are looking at. When your plans change, take ten seconds to switch again.

How to Switch Back to Your iPhone

Reverse the process. On your iPhone, open Find My, tap Me, and tap Use This iPhone as My Location. Only one device is shared at a time, so choosing the iPhone replaces the iPad.

An extra detail for Apple Watch owners: if you share from an iPhone paired with a GPS and cellular Apple Watch, your location can be shared from the watch when you are out of range of your iPhone and the watch is on your wrist.

Will the iPad Location Be Accurate?

It depends on the model, and this catches a lot of people out.

WiFi only iPads do not have GPS. They estimate location using nearby WiFi networks and your internet connection. In a city with plenty of known networks that is often close enough. In rural areas, on a moving vehicle or when using a VPN, the position can be far off or slow to update.

WiFi plus cellular iPads include a GPS receiver, so they locate you much more accurately, including when you are away from WiFi.

If you want to share your location with people from a tablet, a cellular model is the better choice. Our iPad mini 7 guide explains which small iPad offers 5G, and the iPad hire UK costs page helps if you only need one for a short period.

What to Do If Your Location Will Not Update

Work through these checks in order.

  1. Confirm the toggle. In Find My, open Me and make sure Share My Location is on.
  2. Check system settings. In Settings, Privacy & Security, Location Services, confirm Location Services and the Share My Location item are both on.
  3. Test the connection. Switch off Airplane Mode, join a working WiFi network or check that your cellular data is active.
  4. Set the date and time to automatic. Open Settings, General, Date & Time and turn on Set Automatically.
  5. Update the software. Install any pending iPadOS update on the iPad and iOS update on the iPhone.
  6. Restart both devices. A simple restart clears stuck location requests.
  7. Sign out and back in. If nothing else works, sign out of Find My or your Apple Account on the iPad and sign in again.

If you are troubleshooting more deeply, a full wipe is a last resort. See how to reset iPad for the safe way to do it, and for phones read factory reset without password.

How to Stop Sharing Location

If you would rather share with fewer people, or nobody:

  1. Open Find My and tap People.
  2. Tap the person’s name.
  3. Choose Stop Sharing My Location.

To switch sharing off completely, tap Me and turn off Share My Location. You can also stop sharing inside Messages by opening the conversation and stopping location there.

Change What Apps Can See

Find My sharing is separate from what individual apps can access. To control that, open Settings, Privacy & Security, Location Services, tap an app and choose Never, Ask Next Time, While Using the App or Always. Some apps offer a Precise Location toggle, and turning it off gives the app only an approximate area.

Privacy works best in layers. Once your location settings are right, consider tidying the rest of the tablet too, starting with how to hide apps on iPad, and if you type a lot on a keyboard in dim rooms, learn how to turn on keyboard light settings on any laptop.

Do Not Use Location Spoofing Apps

Search results for this topic include tools that promise to “change” or fake your location. They are a different thing from Find My. They can require access to your device or Apple Account, may break apps that depend on real location and can be unsafe. If you only want to move your shared location from one Apple device to another, the built-in Find My method above does everything you need.

Location on Rented, Shared and Business iPads

If you hire iPads for an event, never sign them into a personal Apple Account or turn on your personal Find My sharing. Personal accounts on shared devices can leak location, messages and photos, and they can trigger Activation Lock problems when the device goes back. Businesses should manage devices centrally, and our explainer on MDM for rented devices shows how. Read about corporate iPad security risks and the risks of iPad rentals before you deploy them. Ten Seconds That Keep Your Location Honest

Location sharing is only useful when it reflects reality. Choose the device that travels with you, pick a cellular iPad if accuracy matters, and switch back whenever your habits change. That small habit means the people who rely on your location are never looking at an empty desk.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I switch my location from iPhone to iPad?

Open the Find My app on your iPad, tap Me, turn on Share My Location, then select Use This iPad as My Location. Your friends and family will then see the iPad’s location instead of your iPhone.

Can I share my iPad location instead of my iPhone?

Yes. Apple allows you to choose which device shares your location. The selected device becomes the source shown to people you share with, so choose the device that is normally with you.

Does an iPad need GPS to share its location?

No, but accuracy depends on the model. WiFi-only iPads estimate location using nearby networks, while WiFi + Cellular iPads include GPS for more accurate tracking when away from WiFi.

Why is my iPad location not updating?

Common causes include disabled Location Services, no internet connection, outdated software, incorrect date and time settings or the wrong device being selected in Find My. Check Share My Location first, then restart and update both devices if needed.

Can I switch location back from iPad to iPhone?

Yes. Open Find My on your iPhone, tap Me, then choose Use This iPhone as My Location. Apple only shares one device location at a time, so switching replaces the previous device.

Can I use an iPad as my location device while travelling?

Yes. A cellular iPad is usually better for travel because it can update location away from WiFi. A WiFi-only iPad may show delayed or less accurate locations when moving between areas.

Should I use my personal Apple Account on a rented iPad?

No. Avoid signing into personal Apple Accounts on rented or shared iPads. It can expose personal information, activate Find My features and create problems when the device needs to be returned.

How should businesses manage location settings on rented iPads?

For business events, exhibitions or temporary projects, use managed devices rather than personal accounts. Mobile Device Management (MDM) allows companies to control apps, security settings and access across multiple iPads.

Can rented iPads be used for event check-in or field work?

Yes. iPads are commonly used for registrations, surveys, lead collection and mobile workflows. Before deployment, configure each device with the correct apps, network access and privacy settings to avoid issues during the event.
