How to Turn Off Private Browsing on iPhone (Safari and Chrome)

How to Turn Off Private Browsing on iPhone

Your Safari bar has gone dark, your tabs look different and your history has stopped saving. That is Private Browsing, and it is easy to switch on by accident. To turn it off, open Safari, tap the tabs button in the bottom right corner, tap Private at the bottom of the screen so it switches to Tabs, then tap Done. But that is only half of the job. Your private tabs are still open in the background, and there is a good chance you are searching for a fix because the Private button has disappeared. This guide covers all of it.

Steps to Turn Off Private Browsing in Safari

  • Open the Safari app on your iPhone.
  • Tap the Tabs button (two overlapping squares or three dots depending on your iOS version) in the bottom corner.
  • Look at the bottom of the screen where Private is highlighted.
  • Tap the Tabs or group option next to it to switch back to your regular non-private tabs.
  • Tap a specific tab or press the plus icon to continue normal browsing.
  • The address bar will turn from dark/black back to white/grey, meaning private mode is off.

Your address bar returns to its usual colour and Safari starts saving your history again. Some versions place a Private button directly in the tab view. Tap it once to turn private mode off, and tap it again to turn it back on.

Turn Off Incognito Mode in Google Chrome

  1. Open the Google Chrome app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap the Tabs icon (square with a number) at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Tap the Incognito icon (glasses/hat symbol) at the top to view your open Incognito tabs.
  4. Close your open Incognito tabs by tapping the “X” on each tab or closing the window.
  5. Tap back to the standard tabs or open a new standard tab to return to regular browsing.

How To Close All Private Tabs

Switching back does not close your private tabs. They stay open, tucked away in the background, so anyone who switches to Private can still see them. Close them properly:

  1. Open the tab view while in Private mode.
  2. Press and hold Done, or tap the tab count.
  3. Choose Close All Tabs.
  4. Then switch back to normal Tabs.

To close just one tab, tap the small X in its top corner or swipe it to the left.

Pro Tip

Instead of using Private Browsing for everything, create separate Profiles in Safari for work and personal browsing (available in Settings > Safari > New Profile on newer versions). Each profile keeps its own history, cookies and tab groups, so you get a tidy separation without losing any history you actually want. Keep Private Browsing for genuinely one off searches.

How To Tell If Private Browsing Is On

Safari makes it obvious once you know what to look for.

  • The address bar and toolbar turn dark grey or black.
  • The word Private is highlighted when you open the tab view.
  • Sites you visit do not show in your History.
  • Autofill suggestions from your searches are missing.

If none of that applies and you are in another browser, jump to the Chrome section further down

Why Private Browsing Is Stuck Or Missing

If you cannot find the Private button, or your iPhone will not leave private mode, one of these is usually the reason.

Screen Time is restricting websites. If Limit Adult Websites or Allowed Websites Only is switched on, Safari removes the Private option entirely. To check, go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Content Restrictions > Web Content. Select Unrestricted Access to bring the button back. You may need your Screen Time passcode.

  • Content & Privacy Restrictions is on for a child account. A parent using Family Sharing may have limited Safari features.
  • A work or school profile is installed. Managed devices can hide private mode. Check with your IT admin.
  • Safari needs a restart. Swipe up from the bottom, pause, then swipe Safari away. Reopen it and check again.
  • An update is missing. Go to Settings > General > Software Update and install the latest version.

If your iPhone is managed by a company, see our guide to MDM for rented devices to understand why some options are locked.

How To Lock Private Browsing With Face Id

Your private tabs can be hidden behind Face ID or your passcode whenever you leave Safari.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Safari. On iOS 18 and later, you may need to tap Apps first, then Safari.
  3. Scroll to Privacy & Security.
  4. Switch on Require Face ID to Unlock Private Browsing.

This protects any private tabs you leave open, which is especially useful if someone else picks up your phone.

What Private Browsing Does And Does Not Hide

People often expect more from Private Browsing than it delivers.

What it does:

  • Does not save your browsing history on the device
  • Does not remember searches or autofill entries
  • Deletes cookies and website data when you close the tabs
  • Stops Safari sharing your open tabs with other devices

What it does not do:

  • Hide your activity from your internet provider, your employer or your school
  • Hide your IP address from websites
  • Remove downloads, bookmarks or files you save
  • Make you anonymous online

Private Browsing is about keeping activity off your own device, not off the internet. Use it for surprise gifts, shared phones or one off logins, but do not treat it as a security tool.

How To Clear Your Normal History

Turned off Private Browsing but want to remove what Safari already saved? Go to Settings > Safari (or Settings > Apps > Safari), then tap Clear History and Website Data. Choose a time range and confirm. If you use an iPad as well, the same idea applies, and our guides on how to delete search history iPad and delete cookies on iPad walk you through it.

Before you wipe anything you might need later, it is smart to back up your iPhone, especially if you keep saved logins or bookmarks. And if you signed up for anything in private tabs, learn how to cancel subscription on iPhone so nothing keeps charging you unnoticed.

Using Rented iPhones or iPads? Clear Your Browsing Before You Return Them

If you borrow or hire devices for events, training days or temporary staff, you should assume the next user could see anything left on them. Signing out of accounts, closing tabs and clearing history should be part of your return checklist. That is far simpler when devices are set up properly from the start. Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the Private button on iPhone Safari?

Open Safari, tap the tabs button in the bottom right, then look at the tab group bar at the bottom of the screen. Private sits there beside Tabs. If it is missing, Screen Time website restrictions are the most likely cause.

Does closing Safari turn off Private Browsing?

No. Private Browsing stays on and your private tabs remain open until you switch back to normal Tabs and close the private ones. Turn on Face ID protection so they are locked when you leave Safari.

Can someone see my Private Browsing history on my iPhone?

Not in Safari’s History, because it is not saved there. But your internet provider, your employer or your school network can still see your activity, and anyone opening your still open private tabs can see those pages unless they are locked.

Why is Private Browsing greyed out or missing on my iPhone?

Screen Time is the usual reason. If Limit Adult Websites or Allowed Websites Only is selected under Web Content, Safari hides Private Browsing. Set it to Unrestricted Access, or ask the person who set the Screen Time passcode.

How do I turn off Private Browsing on Chrome for iPhone?

Tap the tabs button, then tap the regular tabs icon instead of the incognito one. Close your incognito tabs using Edit and Close All if you do not want them left open.

Does Private Browsing save cookies?

Safari does not keep cookies once you close the private tabs, and it stops websites from tracking you between different sites during that session. Cookies from your normal browsing stay unless you clear them yourself.
