MacBook
- Press the F6 key on the top function row to increase keyboard brightness, or press F5 to decrease it. (On older models, you may use F5 and F6 directly; on newer ones, look for dedicated brightness keys or a Touch Bar).
- Go to the Apple Menu > System Settings > Keyboard, then adjust the Keyboard brightness slider.
Windows
- Press the dedicated backlight key on the top function row (F1–F12, commonly F5, F9, or F10).
- If that does not work, hold the Fn key while pressing the backlight key, or try Fn + Spacebar.
Brand-specific shortcuts include:
- Dell: Press Fn + F10 or Fn + Right Arrow.
HP: Press Fn + F5 or Fn + F4.
Lenovo: Press Fn + Spacebar.
Asus: Press Fn + F4 (increase) and Fn + F3 (decrease).
iPad
- Standard Apple Smart Keyboards and Magic Keyboards for iPad do not feature adjustable built-in manual backlight keys.
- Instead, iPad Magic Keyboards feature an ambient light sensor that automatically adjusts the key backlighting based on your environment’s lighting. You can manually adjust the overall display brightness or check Settings > General > Keyboard > Hardware Keyboard if a connected third-party keyboard has custom companion software or shortcut controls.
You open your laptop in a dark hotel room, on a night train or at the back of a conference hall, and the keys disappear. The fix is usually one key press, but which key depends on your brand, and some laptops need a menu instead. This guide covers every common case in the order most people need it: MacBook first, then Lenovo, HP, Dell, ASUS and Acer, then iPad keyboards, then what to do when the light refuses to switch on.
First, Check That Your Keyboard Is Actually Backlit
Not every laptop has a keyboard light, and no setting can add one. Look for these signs before you try anything else:
- A small symbol on a key, usually a keyboard outline with tiny rays, on the function row or the space bar.
- A faint glow around the letters when you use the laptop in a dim room.
- The words “backlit keyboard” in the product listing or the manual.
Recent MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models all include one. On Windows laptops it depends on the price tier: business ranges such as ThinkPad and Latitude often offer it, while budget models frequently skip it. How to Turn On Keyboard Light on a MacBook
Apple gives you several routes, and the right one depends on your model.
Method 1: Control Center.
Click the Control Center icon in the menu bar, click Keyboard Brightness, then drag the slider to the right. Drag it fully left to turn the light off.
If you cannot see Keyboard Brightness, add it. Open the Apple menu, choose System Settings, click Control Center, find Keyboard Brightness and turn on Show in Menu Bar or Show in Control Center.
Method 2: System Settings.
Open the Apple menu, choose System Settings, click Keyboard in the sidebar and drag the Keyboard brightness slider. This works on every Mac laptop with a backlit keyboard.
Method 3: Function keys.
Older MacBooks have dedicated keyboard brightness keys. Press the increase key to switch the light on and keep pressing to make it brighter. Many recent models dropped those keys, which is why pressing F5 or F6 does nothing on them. Use Method 1 or 2 instead.
Method 4: Touch Bar.
On MacBook Pro models with a Touch Bar, expand the Control Strip and tap the brightness increase button. Touch and hold the decrease button to turn the light off.
You can also let macOS handle it. In System Settings under Keyboard, turn on “Adjust keyboard brightness in low light” so the backlight comes on by itself in a dark room. Set “Turn keyboard backlight off after inactivity” to a time you like. The light sensor sits near the camera at the top of the screen, so keep that area uncovered.

How to Turn On Keyboard Light on Windows Laptops
Windows itself has no universal keyboard light switch. The control belongs to your laptop maker, and it is nearly always a function key shortcut. Match the icon on your keys, because the exact key changes between models and years.
| Brand | Usual shortcut | What to expect |
| Lenovo ThinkPad | Fn + Space | Cycles through off, dim and bright |
| HP | F4, F5 or F9 | Look for the keyboard icon; some models need Fn held down |
| Dell | F10 or Fn + F10 | Some business models use Fn + Right Arrow |
| ASUS | Fn + F4 to brighten, Fn + F3 to dim | Icons match the arrows |
| Acer | Fn + F9 | Often cycles through levels |
If nothing happens, work through these in order:
- Check Fn Lock. Many laptops swap the top row between media functions and F keys. Try pressing Fn and Esc together, then repeat the shortcut.
- Open Windows Mobility Center. Press the Windows key and X, then choose Mobility Center. If your laptop supports it, a Keyboard Backlighting tile appears with a brightness control.
- Install the maker’s hotkey software. Lenovo, HP and Dell each provide a hotkey or utility package. Without it, some shortcuts stay dead after a clean Windows install.
- Look in the BIOS or UEFI. A few Dell and other business laptops have a Keyboard Illumination option that must be set to on.
Some Windows laptops also dim the backlight when you are on battery saver mode, so if the light seems weak, check your power settings before assuming a fault. ThinkPad users who want more from their function keys can also read how to screenshot on Lenovo ThinkPad models.
Keyboard Light on iPad
Apple sells several iPad keyboards, and only some have lit keys. The Magic Keyboard for iPad has backlit keys that respond to ambient light, and on supported models you can adjust brightness in Settings under General, Keyboard, then Hardware Keyboard. Newer versions with a function row add dedicated brightness keys. The lighter Smart Keyboard Folio has no backlight at all.
Third party keyboards vary widely, so check the box for a backlight symbol. If you are still choosing a tablet and want a keyboard that lights up, our comparison of iPad Pro versus Air shows which models pair with which Magic Keyboard. The smaller iPad mini has no Apple keyboard option, a point covered in our iPad mini 7 guide.
Keyboard Light Not Working? Try These Fixes
The room is too bright. On many laptops the automatic mode keeps the light off in daylight. Test in a dark room, or turn the setting to manual.
- The brightness is at zero. On a Mac, the Keyboard brightness slider all the way left switches the light off. Slide it right.
- A restart clears software glitches. Save your work, restart and try again.
- Update the system. Install pending macOS or Windows updates and any keyboard or hotkey driver updates.
Reset hardware controls on Intel Macs. On older Intel MacBooks, resetting the SMC can restore the light. Apple silicon Macs reset it automatically when you restart.
The laptop will not respond at all. If the machine itself is misbehaving, see our guides on Lenovo laptop power problems and Dell laptop power problems.
Liquid damage or a failed LED. If only some keys light up, or the light died after a spill, the backlight layer may be damaged and needs professional repair. Heat can also be involved, so checking laptop heat levels is a sensible extra step.
Keyboard Lights for Events, Training and Shared Laptops
Backlit keyboards matter more than most people expect when several people share one machine. Trainers, event staff and presenters often work in dimmed rooms where a glowing keyboard saves time and mistakes. If you are hiring laptops for a session, ask for backlit models and confirm the shortcut in your setup notes.

If you also use an iPad, a related settings tip is worth knowing: you can hide apps on iPad so private apps stay out of view when you present on a shared screen.
A Small Setting With a Big Payoff
A keyboard light is one of those features you ignore for months and then need urgently. Find the shortcut, test it in the dark, set the timeout, and you will never have to guess which key is which again. If yours will not switch on after every step above, the problem is almost certainly the hardware, and it is worth having it looked at before your next late night or early flight.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do all laptops have a backlit keyboard?
No. A keyboard light is a hardware feature, so it cannot be added through software. Many premium business laptops, MacBooks and higher-spec models include backlit keys, while some budget laptops do not. Always check the exact model specifications before renting or buying.
How do I turn on my laptop keyboard light?
The method depends on the laptop brand. MacBooks usually use System Settings or Control Center, while Windows laptops use a function key shortcut such as Fn + Space on Lenovo ThinkPad or a dedicated backlight key on HP, Dell, ASUS and Acer models.
Why is my keyboard light not working?
The most common reasons are that the laptop does not have a backlit keyboard, the brightness is set to zero, the wrong function key is being used, or the required manufacturer software is missing. Try checking the backlight symbol on the keyboard first.
Can I use a backlit keyboard on a rented laptop?
Yes. If you need laptops for an event, training session or temporary office setup, ask the rental provider for models with backlit keyboards before your booking. This is especially useful for conferences, workshops and venues with low lighting where staff need to work quickly.
Which laptops usually have backlit keyboards?
MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, Lenovo ThinkPad, Dell Latitude, HP business laptops and many ASUS models commonly include keyboard lighting. Availability depends on the exact model and specification, so confirm before ordering a specific laptop.
Does a keyboard backlight drain laptop battery?
Yes, but usually only slightly. Most laptops allow you to reduce brightness or set the light to switch off after inactivity, helping you balance visibility and battery life.
Should I choose laptops with backlit keyboards for events?
For presentations, exhibitions, training sessions and evening events, backlit keyboards are often worth choosing. They help staff and presenters work in darker rooms without needing extra lighting or interrupting the audience.
What should I check before renting laptops for a conference?
Confirm the laptop model, keyboard layout, operating system, battery condition, charger availability and features such as a backlit keyboard. Testing a sample device before the event can prevent delays when multiple users need to start at the same time.
